What blue light does to your brain
A chronobiology study compared two groups before bedtime: one read on an LED tablet for two hours, the other read a paper book under low light.
The result leaves no room for doubt. Among the tablet users, the production of melatonin — the hormone that triggers sleep — fell by 55%. And its onset was delayed by an hour and a half on average.
In other words: your brain still thinks it is daytime. It simply is not preparing for the night.
The problem does not stop when the screen goes off
Even after switching off, light keeps sabotaging your night: a streetlamp behind the curtain, the red standby light on a device, dawn at 5 a.m. in summer.
Your eyelids do not block everything. Your brain still registers it — and releases less melatonin.
Three things to do tonight
- Cut screens 60 to 90 minutes before bed. That is how long melatonin needs to start up again.
- Lower the light in the room in the evening: warm, dimmed, indirect.
- Make it completely dark. A blackout mask removes what the curtains let through — and keeps all pressure off your eyelids.
Light is the most powerful signal your body clock receives. Taking control of it means taking back your nights.
